No appointments available at Spanish immigration: what it means and what to do
What the message actually means
When the ICP portal shows «En este momento no hay citas disponibles», the system is saying one thing only: at that second, for that province and that trámite, the calendar had no free slot. It is not an error in your application, it is not a problem with your NIE, and it does not mean the office has stopped working.
The confusion is understandable, because the same message covers two very different situations: a calendar that is full, and an office that has temporarily withdrawn its calendar from the system. Some provinces publish a specific notice on the office page — worth reading before you keep trying.
Why slots are so hard to find
Immigration offices do not publish their whole calendar at once. Slots enter the system irregularly: when an office opens new dates, when somebody cancels, or when a reserved place is released.
Three practical consequences:
- There is no good time of day to look. The idea that «appointments come out at eight in the morning» circulates in forums and groups, but it does not match how the system behaves.
- Slots do not last. When they appear, many people are checking the same province and trámite at the same moment.
- Refreshing does not improve your odds, unless you happen to be looking in the exact minute a slot appears.
What you can do, in order
- Check that you picked the right trámite. The names change from province to province: what one calls «toma de huellas» sits inside a different group in another. Pick the wrong one and you will see «no appointments» even when there are some. Our guide to the fingerprint appointment explains the document list in detail.
- Look for a notice from your office. Some provinces state that the calendar is temporarily closed. There is nothing to refresh in that case.
- Check whether your trámite can be filed online. With a digital certificate, several renewals go through the MERCURIO platform with no appointment at all.
- Keep evidence if you are on a deadline. Screenshots with a visible date.
- Use an alert service. If you cannot sit in front of a screen all day, the sensible option is to have something watch for you and tell you the moment a slot appears.
A warning about resold appointments
Alongside legitimate alert services, a black market has grown around appointments already booked in other people's names, sometimes sold for hundreds of euros. The Spanish National Police has dismantled several groups doing this, and appointments obtained that way can be cancelled at the office itself.
The difference is easy to check: a legitimate service does not sell you a booked appointment. It tells you a slot is free so you can take it yourself, with your own details — or books it in your name, with the details you provided.
In short
«No appointments available» describes a moment, not a permanent state. Slots appear without a fixed schedule and disappear fast, so the difference between getting an appointment and not getting one usually comes down to looking at the right moment — or having something look for you.
